3110: The Letter to the Hebrews (Study of a New Testament Book: Year 3)
This final year paper is intended to offer students the opportunity to study a book of the New Testament in depth, providing a rich and integrated understanding of linguistic and exegetical approaches to New Testament study. Students will learn about the development of Greek as represented in the New Testament, with a particular focus on the Greek of Hebrews. They will improve their translation skills in order to engage both critically and creatively with translations of the New Testament, considering the text in its context, including matters of textual criticism. Students will gain an understanding of key concepts in Hebrews, including faith, relationship with the Old Testament, and Christology.
Assessment is by one two-hour exam and one assignment (students will prepare one piece of extended writing [2500 words] for assessment, which will be a commented translation of a section of the Letter to the Hebrews).
